John Lester pitched very well against the Angels in games one and four. I am very concerned
about Josh Beckett because in game three he had a very bad outing. You have got to feel for Mike Lowell because every step he took he looked like he was in pain, and on top of that he was hurting our team. From Courant.com:
BOSTON
— It wasn’t a sweep, but it was just as sweet.
The Red Sox needed one more game than they usually do when playing the Angels in the Division Series, but the outcome was all the same as they rode a walk-off single in the ninth by rookie Jed Lowrie for a 3-2 victory Monday night in Game 4 at Fenway Park, taking the Division Series 3 games to 1.
The Angels avoided their third consecutive Division Series sweep in five years at the hands of the Red Sox with a 12-inning victory Sunday night. But facing the unenviable task of returning to Anaheim for Game 5 Wednesday, the Red Sox got an enormous break in the top of the ninth to maintain a 2-2 tie, then won it in the bottom half to advance to the American League Championship Series for the fourth time in six years.
“When you play against good teams, you have to take advantage of every single thing,” David Ortiz said in a champagne-soaked clubhouse. “Let me tell you, that’s why they call this place the House of Pain. We’re getting used to this.”
The Red Sox will face their 21st-century rivals, the Rays, in Game 1 of the best-of-seven ALCS Friday night at Tropicana Field.
The Red Sox lost the season series to the Rays 10-8, which allowed the Rays to unseat the Red Sox as AL East champions. Despite the Rays’ relatively short existence — the franchise began play in 1998 — the two teams have had several memorable clashes, including this past June, when Coco Crisp rushed the mound against James Shields to start a bench-clearing brawl.
With one out in the ninth Monday, Jason Bay hit a ground-rule double off Scot Shields just out of the reach of Reggie Willits down the right field line. Then, after Mark Teixeira made a diving catch of a Mark Kotsay line drive that would have won it, Lowrie did the honors, singling to right as Bay raced home with the series-winning run.
“The only thing I was thinking was scoring,” said Bay, who was acquired in the Manny Ramirez trade on July 31. “I was thinking I was going to score so bad I almost fell down rounding third. I was running faster than my legs would go. I knew if I didn’t fall down, I’d make it. It’s been a blast every step of the way.”
